Malaysia bans ‘indecent’ ballet, Thailand chops ‘divisive’ Macbeth

Friends report a pre-election cultural chill in Malaysia, where western cultural enterprises are being given an Islamic cold shoulder. The demolition of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra continues quietly. Now the Singapore Dance Theatre has been banned for appearing in tutus and tights that were deemed ‘indecent’ by the state censor. They were planning to dance Swan Lake.

In Thailand, meanwhile, a nervous regime has banned an adaptation of Macbeth for being ‘divisive’. The show, aptly titled Shakespeare Must Die, employs video footage of recent Thai protests.
